Fed: Costello says world economic outlook grim

Treasurer Peter Costello said today the world economic outlook was grim but Australia
might defy the downturn in the global economy if the United States bounces back.

Mr COSTELLO says he doesn't want to underplay what's happening in the world, which
is very, very grim.

However, he predicts Australia's December quarter will be strong and if the US comes
back the domestic economy might defy what's happening in the world.
